7 Questions to Ask Before You Buy a Roll Forming Machine
Most buyers approach a roll forming machine purchase the way they would approach buying a car—focused on price, speed, and what the brochure says. Question 1: What Material Thickness and Yield Strength Is This Machine Actually Rated For?

A machine that runs 0.5 mm galvanized steel beautifully may be completely unable to run 0.8 mm or 350 MPa yield strength material. The difference is in the frame structure, shaft diameter, roller material, and number of forming stations.
Ask the supplier to state explicitly: maximum material thickness, minimum material thickness, maximum yield strength, and the specific steel grades the machine has been tested with. Then verify this with a trial run on your actual material—not a similar material. If the supplier cannot provide a trial on your specification, walk away.

Roller material is the primary determinant of how long a machine maintains dimensional accuracy. GCr15 bearing steel at HRC58–62 is the standard specification for a production-grade roll forming machine. A supplier who quotes a machine with 8 stations for a complex profile and then delivers one that runs poorly has not served you well. Ask them to confirm the station count is adequate for your profile geometry and material specification. Get it in writing.
Question 4: Will You Run a Sample of My Profile Before the Machine Ships?
Factory acceptance testing (FAT)—running a sample of your actual profile through the machine at the supplier's facility before it is shipped—is the single most effective quality verification step in the buying process. It proves the machine can produce your profile to your tolerances, identifies setup issues before the machine arrives at your facility, and gives you something to hold the supplier accountable to.
Ask for FAT explicitly. A confident supplier will include it as standard. A supplier who resists or quotes FAT as an expensive optional extra is signaling that they are not fully confident in their machine. Insist on FAT and be present (or send a representative) when it is run.
Question 5: What Is the Warranty, and What Does It Cover?
A warranty sounds simple but varies enormously in practice. Some warranties cover the structural frame and PLC but exclude rollers, shear blades, and bearings—these are the parts that wear fastest. Some warranties are conditional on the machine being operated within narrow tolerances; if you run a heavier gauge than quoted, the warranty is void.
Ask for the warranty in writing, in plain language. Confirm: what is covered (structure, hydraulics, electrical, rollers)? What is the claim process? What is the response time? What is the exclusion list? A good warranty reflects supplier confidence in their product.
Question 6: What Spare Parts Are Available, and What Is the Lead Time?
A machine that stops because a bearing failed is losing money every hour it is down. The question is not whether you will need spare parts—it is when. Ask the supplier: what is the standard spare parts kit for this machine? What is the lead time for replacement rollers? For a new shaft? For PLC components?
A supplier with good spares logistics will have common wear parts in stock. A supplier who takes 8 weeks to deliver replacement rollers is not a supplier you want to depend on. Establish the spares relationship before you pay the deposit.
Question 7: Do You Have Reference Customers in My Region or Industry?
Apart from visiting a reference customer's facility if possible, asking for references in your region or industry tells you whether the supplier has experience with the specific conditions you face—your material supply, your profile requirements, your operational context. A supplier who has sold machines to similar operations in your market is a better bet than one whose references are all in a different climate and material supply chain.

Will you provide the PLC program backup and I/O diagram? Without these, you are completely dependent on the supplier for any future PLC changes or troubleshooting. A reputable supplier provides them as standard. What is the shaft diameter? Larger shafts resist deflection better and maintain roller alignment longer. Shaft diameter of Ø70–90 mm for standard-duty and Ø90–120 mm for heavy-duty is the range to expect. Smaller shafts are a cost reduction at your expense. What is the delivery lead time? And more importantly—what are the payment terms? A 30% deposit with balance against shipping or installation is standard. Be cautious of suppliers requiring 100% upfront payment.
